Raj Varadhan M.Phil, D.A.B.M.P

Raj Varadhan is a board certified medical physicist who has been with MRO since 1996.
Raj received his undergraduate degree in physics when he was 19 and a master’s degree in Nuclear physics from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur . Raj has done advanced graduate work and research both in India and USA in the areas of High energy Nuclear Physics, Quantum algebra and Radiological Physics and has graduate degrees in all those disciplines. He completed his Medical Physics training and residency at Wayne State University in Detroit. He is board certified in Radiation Oncology Physics by the American Board of Medical Physics and is currently pursuing certification in Medical Health Physics and Diagnostic Imaging Physics.

While at MRO, Raj has been instrumental in implementing several new technologies and treatment techniques into clinical practice. He was responsible for implementing Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) to clinical practice in 2002 at Fairview Southdale and has played lead roles in  implementing IMRT to other MRO clinics. Raj has also implemented physics aspects of prostate seed implant procedure at Brainerd, Unity & Mercy clinics and commissioned the X-Jaws feature in Radionics Stereotactic Radiation Therapy. He will be actively involved in the implementation of Image Guided Radiation Therapy technology at several MRO clinics in 2005 and beyond.

In addition to his clinical duties in Radiation Oncology, Raj also serves as Radiation Safety Officer to Allina’s Unity & Mercy Hospitals and also for the Nuclear Cardiology departments of the Metropolitan Cardiology Associates. He has also mentored and served as graduate advisor to students at the Graduate Biophysics program at University of Minnesota. His research interests are in optimization of radiotherapy beams, Montecarlo dose calculation and image guided radiotherapy.
