3D Treatment Planning
Three-dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy (3-D CRT) is widely practiced today.  IMRT is an advanced form of this conformal approach which not only uses 3-D imaging and treatment delivery, but allows for varying intensities of radiation to produce dose distributions that are far more conformal than those possible with standard 3-D CRT. Three-dimensional radiation therapy delivers radiation from the outside of the body from different directions, with the use of a high energy linear accelerator.  The treatment fields are shaped to your particular anatomy utilizing a CT scan to define the area to be treated and nearby uninvolved structures or organs. This enables your radiation oncologist to deliver the necessary amount of radiation to your cancer while reducing the amount of radiation given to normal structures thereby decreasing the risk of side effects and complications.
